SB gang member shot, injured in drive-by shooting

By Stacia Glenn
10/06/2009 05:28:42 PM PDT

San Bernardino police say a documented gang member was shot several times late Monday in a drive-by shooting.
The 18-year-old victim was walking in the area of Seventh Street and N. Medical Center Drive just before midnight when a "vehicle drove past and several shots were fired," said Lt. Dan Kiel.

The victim suffered serious injuries but is expected to survive.

I'm going to go off in the deep end a bit, but I wonder how they (the papers) decide to get these stories out? They must be highly selective on what they want to present to the ignorant portion of the public. If one shooting was news on the West side or in the city in general, then I could see the justification of them putting out the article but since that's obviously not the case, I fail to see how this is even news worthy. I see this bias is common among most media outlets in other cities as well.

They ignore mass amounts of crime related issues that plague the city and then select one violent indecent for appearance in the daily paper in order to make it seem as if the problem is seemingly not their or uncommon all together.

They'll use divisive language such as "shooting startles neighborhood" or "drive-by shooting leaves neighbors shocked" all in accord with their dishonest standards. Yet conversely, their over there squandering money on dubious "crime cleaning programs" in order to address the issues there so selective of putting out to the public eye in the first place. Hypocrites.

Anyway, hopefully the victim pulls through.

Westside shooting Empty What is news worthy?

Ryda, you highlighted some very important points. I didn't comment initially but I noted the lack of detail in this story from the start. I figured the reason for the story was to support the points made by all three of the candidates running for Mayor in the previous days debate who despite their approach all agree on one thing. They all desire to continue pouring millions of dollars "that the city, county, state and federal government for that matter," doesn't have into anti-crime programs to counter-act problems that past city administrators created. The way I see it is we are rolling the dice and the options have been limited to 3 sides. So the point I am trying to make is the citizens are going to lose no matter who wins.

It doesn't matter at this point if Mayor Morris and his "nice guy program," gets the nod or if Penman gets a chance to go through his "tough guy," approach or Avila's "forceful leadership," plan is chosen. Without a clear and concise economic program that stresses the use of the resources this city has at its disposal, "this means cutting back on the reliance of political welfare programs such as the federal gang and terror funds," crime will continue to be a problem that will ballon if for no other reason than the lack of opportunity and activity in the region. The state want's to release more people to the street's due to the cost of warehousing them behind bars at a time when competition among the more educated members of society is at an all-time high and jobs are increasingly scarce. That when combined with the problems San Bernardino already has with the paroles the state paid the city to take in past years, is a recipe for disaster.

You've already got parolees in the region whose restrictions are being ignored by their handlers because they know there is no chance of them fulfilling this obligation. In a number of cases the only option to make ends meet is to hustle. I've got a number of homies who know and are exploiting this loop hole to their advantage. They know that unless they commit a violent offense or get caught up in a moment of complete stupidity, they aren't going to be violated because the state doesn't want them back. So I don't care how tough you get, the city is out of options as far as policing is concerned. It is time back away from the national political example of focusing on fringe concerns such as health care and immigration and solve the financial and economic problems that are the real causes of crime and recidivism.

I meet with K. P. (assistant to Morris) frequently along with some other key figures in this city. I can tell you that they really do have the best interest of our children and community's in their mind. However, the way they go about things is so very old skool. They want to put more cops on the street to fight crime. That is not the answer, but to them, it is. As far as our print media-I think when they make certain comments about the community being in shock...they are representing those who most likely are in shock. Nobody in a right frame of mind will enjoy each and everytime a person or persons get shot and stabbed on their street or block. Each time something like that happens people gather in the street and begin to shake their heads and talk about how things need to change while watching so and so get carried off on a stretcher. There seems to be a concentrated effort to fight crime on our SB streets from the papers, the ward representatives, mayor, and other city officials all move in unison as much as they can. So when they note a story I believe it is to further push an agenda, not because they actually care for the victims. But, the real victims are the ones who have to stay in a "hood" and be terrorized by the activity promoted in these hoods. The mothers who go to work with no support at home base who lose their kids to the street thugs. The grandmothers who are helpless in raising a child of the street...they are the victims. And maybe "shock" isn't the real word, maybe "shamed" is a better word to describe what they must feel. Along with the natural "fear" element.

Also, my boy works with the city in putting together their pamplets and what not. He does alot of photography for them. One of the other assistants to the mayor is always giving him a hard time on his photo's. He says it is blantant racism. One example: He takes pictures of families brown black and white or whatever else, as they play at our city parks, or catch a bus downtown. He said they always look for the pics of a white family. He said she flips thru all the pics and only really stops to look at one's with white people. At one meeting I attended the preacher from (New Hope?) brought up a point that the MLK statue needs to be cleaned and the corrosion fixed. Appearantly there is a whole in MLK's chest (in front of City Hall). The point was brought up and they all looked like "so what?" which completely rocked my world to witness that. Also, go into the City Hall and look at the pictures they post of all of our past mayors and other city hall officials. You will rarely see any brown or black faces. I mean, look how long it took to put a damn gas station on the west side? They care about crime but not the way you and I do. We see crime as an effect of poverty and lack of education and so on. They see crime as stats and figures and numbers and some even just with color. So until we have some kats from these areas get politically savy, we won't have that bridge that is so essential to have. A middle. But, right now the only people I see representing us are Preachers. And thats not a proper representation of our hoods these days.

All valid points. They care about crime when it comes to their neighborhoods! As long as WE are the one's getting shot, robbed, etc, then it's not really an issue. Just like back in the day, drugs wernt really an issue until it started effecting other communities other than black and latinos. It's frustrating to hear about all of the programs geared to help or clean up our neighborhoods. Realistically, there is nothing to help us! A cat does his time in prison. He's told he has payed his debt to society. He comes out with good intentions, but finds that he can't get a job. Sooner or later youre gonna do what you gonna do to take care of you and your family. We spend I believe about 2 millon dollars a month on ths war, but can't help the people that are here in this country. Makes no sense to me and I did 1o years in the military. Our society is geared on the rich getting richer and keeping the poor down...

In light of the excellent comments already made, without sounding trite, I'll say it is a catch-22 for ex-cons and ex-gang members attempting to re-enter society as law abiding citizens. They are labeled and discriminated against, my nephew failed to get rental in a pretty nice neighborhood because he has a pit bull and covered in tats. It is a sad disillusionment forced upon them, and if they are accepted it is survival all about suck-it-in, suck-it-up, and the every day motions of bright smiles unless their bosses happen to be real cool (and understandably sympathetic).

Society is all about the rich and big business and the banking system they basically own everyone one way or another their hands is always digging in your pocket.
