SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (KABC) -- A man was shot multiple times and an infant was injured in San Bernardino Thursday afternoon.

An African-American man was shot multiple times at the Newport Village Apartments at 1455 East Date Street, according to the San Bernardino Police Department. The man sustained serious gunshot wounds to his back.

He was taken to a local hospital. Shortly after officers arrived at the hospital, a teenager arrived with an injured infant.

The infant reportedly sustained a graze wound and was listed in stable condition.

Police were at the scene on East Date Street investigating the incident. Evidence markers on the lawn, driveway and street indicated multiple rounds fired.

There was no immediate information about suspects or a motive.

SAN BERNARDINO - Three people - including an infant - suffered gunshot wounds in two separate shootings Thursday as the past month's spate of violent crime continued for another day.

All three victims of Thursday's shootings are expected to survive.

One shooting, reported around 2:35 p.m. took place in broad daylight near an apartment building in the 1400 block of Date Street, which is in the northeast area of San Bernardino.

The victim, described only as a Latino man in his 20s, was shot multiple times

in the back but is expected to live after being taken to Loma Linda University Medical Center, police Sgt. Gary Robertson said.

The suspect, a man in his 20s, was at large. No further details on names or a possible motive were immediately available.

In the second shooting, which happened around the same time as the first, a mother and baby suffered minor wounds, Robertson said.

Additional details on the second shooting were not immediately available, but police learned early in their investigations that the shootings were not related, Robertson said.

Thursday's shootings happened on the last day of a month in which twelve criminal homicides have occurred in San Bernardino.

The recent violence is reminiscent of the high crime rates of the 1990s and threatens to reverse the decline in violent crime that has taken place since the mid-2000s.

One man who lives near the site of the Date Street shooting blamed high unemployment and the resulting stress and lack of productive opportunities for dangerous conditions.

"They don't have nothing to do and they just stand around working their mouths, and that's going to lead to something," Colin Moore, 52, of San Bernardino said.

The Date Street shooting happened outside the Newport Village Apartments, but owner Kevin Brophy said neither shooter nor victim were a tenant there.

Brophy said he conducts criminal background checks on all prospective tenants to weed out troublemakers. But he also said is worried about people he described as rival gang members living near Newport Village and installed a $10,000 camera system outside the Date Street building to monitor the area.

"We're like South Central," Brophy said. "What are the police doing with all these gang members out here?"

Brophy also owns the Cedarwood Apartments where 11-year-old Mynisha Crenshaw was shot and killed in November 2005.

In the aftermath of the 2005 killing, Brophy and his business partners touted surveillance cameras and private security sweeps at apartments in San Bernardino and Highland amid criticism that conditions at Cedarwood were unsafe when Mynisha was killed.

Thursday, Brophy was the one saying managers at nearby apartments were not doing enough to prevent crime.

"I would love to start a neighborhood watch with all of the apartment complexes," he said.

Staff writer Doug Saunders contributed to this report.

That area is very volatile. But as of late, I've been hearing that PPHG is in that area a lot. Of course there are others as well. There is cliques in there and around that area too.

Where did the other one happen? And there seems to be discrepancies between the reports. One reports states the victim was "African-American", and this one states he's Latino.

So they were separate shootings in that same exact area. I spoke to someone I know in that area today and the first guy who was shot, was black and he got shot in front of the newports on date. The second shooting happened around the block near Pumalo and that's where the baby was hit. Either it's gang shit around there or it's just separate and unrelated personal beefs.
