METAIRIE, La. -- As the Saints began their pre-practice stretch on Wednesday, receiver Lance Moore hopped up, looked over at linebacker Jonathan Vilma, and hollered, "Glad you're back! We missed you!" while the entire team offered a round of applause.

"Hello!" Vilma responded with a smile, still seated on the field, one leg pulled over another.

Vilma then did something he had yet to do in 2012: practice.

And it was obvious the Saints were pulling for him to be ready to play this Sunday in Tampa Bay, which might be his only chance to get back on the field this season if his bounty suspension, on appeal, winds up going back into effect in a week or so.

"Vilma continues to fight for what's right and a fair process which I think is extremely justified," Saints quarterback Drew Brees said. "The fact that he was out there practicing today, it just kind of puts a smile on everybody's face knowing what he's been through and having the opportunity to get him back."

Vilma did not work with the first team, but also did not wear any kind of brace or sleeve on his surgically repaired left knee, which has been another obstacle to his return.

"He's back," safety Malcolm Jenkins said. "He's doing a bunch of extra stuff, too, to make sure he's ready as far as conditioning and things like that. But he's ready to play. I know he's been champing at the bit and this is his opportunity this week and I know he'll be ready."

Vilma had several offseason procedures done on his knee, which had slowed him last season and sidelined him five games. He even traveled to Germany to see a specialist in platelet rich plasma therapy, a relatively new blood-spinning technique also used by Los Angeles Lakers star Kobe Bryant and New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez.

Vilma's initial season-long suspension was handed down in May and went into effect in July after his initial appeal was rejected. That suspension lasted through training camp before being vacated by a three-member appeal panel that instructed commissioner Roger Goodell to start the disciplinary process again and clarify his reasons for suspending Vilma and three others -- Saints defensive end Will Smith, free-agent defensive lineman Anthony Hargrove and Cleveland linebacker Scott Fujita -- in connection with New Orleans' cash-for-hits bounty pool.

Because of his rehabilitation, Vilma was placed on the Saints' physically unable to perform list when his initial suspension was lifted, a move that saved the Saints a roster spot and also prevented Vilma from practicing or playing during the first six weeks of the regular season.

The suspensions were reissued last week and promptly appealed by all four players, with appeal hearings set for next Tuesday at NFL headquarters in New York. Vilma remains suspended for the season and Smith for four games. Hargrove's was reduced from eight to seven games and Fujita from three to one.

Vilma did not make himself available for comment while the locker room at Saints headquarters was opened to reporters on Wednesday afternoon. However, his teammates had plenty to say about how he looked and what it would mean to get him back on the field.

"Having him on the sideline when he wasn't suited up was one thing," linebacker Jonathan Casillas said. "Now, suited up, ready to go, maybe get some plays here and there ... It's definitely good to have him out there. He's always been that energy on the defensive side of the ball that we needed."

For the past four seasons, Vilma was a defensive captain and starting middle linebacker, making all the defensive calls on the field. Now the Saints have a new defense under first-year coordinator Steve Spagnuolo. Vilma now has practiced in the scheme only once, although he has been numerous defensive meetings.

"It's Jonathan Vilma. He's one of best football players in the National Football League. He's an instinctive player and he's been in all the meetings for the entire time he's been on PUP, allowing him to see what's going on, understand the schemes," interim head coach Aaron Kromer said. "All we can do as see as it goes on, but I would expect Jon would come back quickly because he's Jon Vilma. ... He does look healthy."

Kromer and Spagnuolo have said they can find a spot for Vilma, even if Curtis Lofton remains at starting middle linebacker. Lofton said he also is confident he and Vilma will have good chemistry on the field.

"You can't have too many great football players out on the football field," Lofton said. "You can't have too many leaders and too many communicators on the field at once.

"He's been the leader of the defense," Lofton added. "Having him back out there, seeing his face, seeing him in pads knowing everything he's been through and is going through and worked so hard to come back on the football field, it adds extra energy. Guys are excited and I'm excited to play with him."

Fresh off his seven-week bounty-related suspension, New Orleans interim coach Joe Vitt did not wait an extra second to rejoin the team in Florida.

On Monday, he said his suspension was excruciating.

''I agonized,'' he said. ''It's hard to go through that. I've been with these guys for seven years. I care very deeply for this team. When you're not there on game day, win or lose, with guys that you respect and love, it was a challenge.''

The Saints losing their first four games under his interim replacement, offensive line coach Aaron Kromer, made it even more agonizing. New Orleans has won two in row but still faces an uphill battle to climb into playoff contention a year after finishing 13-3.

First on Vitt's agenda is fixing the NFL's worst defense statistically.

The Saints (2-4) have allowed a league-high 465.5 yards per game under new defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, including 513 to Tampa Bay, which scored touchdowns on its first three possessions.

Four of the Saints' six opponents have gained more yards against them than anyone else. A fifth, Washington, score a season-high 40 points.

Vitt can help just by coaching the linebackers, his position responsibility. The Saints have been down a defensive staff member since his suspension started at the end of the preseason.

''I know it's been hard for him as much as he loves the team to see us playing the last six or seven weeks,'' linebacker Scott Shanle said. ''Everybody was excited to see him back. He went around on the plane talking to different guys just to catch up.''

The serious work began when Vitt got back to his office around 9 p.m. on Sunday night. Fewer than 12 hours later, he said he already had talked to every assistant coach individually, the team doctors, owner Tom Benson and team president Dennis Lauscha in an attempt to make up for his lost time.

Although Vitt is much more fiery than the reserved Kromer, neither coaches nor players expect any significant changes in tone. From the day training camp started without head coach Sean Payton, who is suspended for the season, the Saints have preached staying the course Payton laid out over six years.

''The foundation has been built,'' Shanle said. ''It will be a different person in front of us, maybe saying some different things, but the message will be the same week in and week out.''

The Saints will try to build on their performance against Tampa Bay even though it was uneven. Drew Brees rallied them from deficits of 14-0 and 21-7 by throwing for 313 yards and four touchdowns in the first half alone.

After safety Malcolm Jenkins ran down wide receiver Vincent Jackson at the end of a 95-yard gain and tackled him just outside the 1 in the third quarter, New Orleans stuffed Tampa Bay on four consecutive plays to take over on downs.

Linebacker Jonathan Vilma, with his season-long bounty suspension on appeal, returned from rehabbing knee surgery and pressured Bucs quarterback Josh Freeman into a near-interception in the first half.

Vilma can play this Sunday at Denver before his and Saints defensive end Will Smith's appeals are heard Oct. 30.

''Jonathan Vilma is the epitome of team player and an inspirational guy that I think all the guys kind of feed off,'' Spagnuolo said. ''I'm sure glad we got him back.''

For at least one week, the Saints will have every player and coach but Payton back from the bounty suspensions. Their mood is much brighter than it was a few weeks ago, when a 28-27 loss at Green Bay dropped them to 0-4.

''I told somebody yesterday that this is the best 2-4 feeling I've ever had,'' said wide receiver Lance Moore, who caught nine passes for 121 yards against Tampa Bay. ''We're not where we want to be, but we're moving in the right direction.''

''I never thought I would say this,'' he said. ''But it's good to see you guys.''

The Atlanta Falcons might not go 16-0, but Roddy White's bravado remains undefeated.

Leading up to Sunday's 31-27 loss to the New Orleans Saints, the talkative wide receiver said the Falcons had the "pedigree" to go 16-0,then said he likes "nothing about the Saints."

And Sunday, White wasn't in the mood to give his team's chief NFC South rival credit for the victory.

"I feel like we kind of gave it away," White said after his seven-reception, 114-yard performance. "We just gave it to them. It wasn't nothing they did. It was what we did in not cashing in on opportunities."
wtf funny-emoticons-4
The Falcons have lost four straight to the Saints, including last season's 45-16 shellacking in Week 16. White plans for the next matchup to end that streak.

"We play them against in three weeks and we'll be ready," he said. "It will be at the Dome and hopefully we'll beat them that time."
