Red Meat is a health food.

Post  American Zombie on Sat Apr 06, 2013 5:50 pm

Red meat is demonized by the media, the medical establishment and of course, by vegetarians and vegans.

Yet, when you look just a bit beneath the surface, there exist no real conclusive evidence that red meat is unhealthy. If anything, far more evidence exists that it is actually a health food that benefits most people.

-It's rich in B vitamins, especially in B12.

-Rich in Iron, and the Iron in red meat is better absorbed than the iron from plant sources.

-It contains many important minerals, such as zinc, selenium, copper and more.

Over the past two decades, red meat has been increasingly blamed for everything from heart disease to cancer. Newspapers and magazines love to plaster alarmist headlines about red meat across their front pages, but as you might suspect if you’ve been reading this blog for any length of time, these claims are ill founded and misleading. In fact, an impartial review of the evidence indicates that red meat is one of the healthiest foods you can eat. But before we get into the health benefits of red meat, I want to take a moment to address the growing number of studies that tarnished its reputation in the first place.

http://chriskresser.com/red-meat-it-does-a-body-good

Just tired of people talking nonsense about red meat as the cause of everything from heat disease to colon cancer. There's no evidence, other than surveys of sick people trying to remember what they ate in the last 20 years. But those studies don't include other factors like level of activity or exercise and other dietary intake.

LOL. My co-workers husband reportedly eats eggs 7 days a week and has been doing so for the past 20 years with no ill-effects on his health or cholesterol levels. In fact, she says his cholesterol levels are lower than hers, and she's a vegan Shocked.

While I'm sure everybody is effected differently by different things, I think this at least lends some credence to the notion that eggs are a health food.

I just recently started hearing about red meat being a health food -- I have to look more into that.

I just recently started hearing about red meat being a health food -- I have to look more into that.

I've been eating like 4 to 6 eggs a day for months now. I recently got blood work done to check my cholesterol level and sure enough, my cholesterol was fairly low. (Maybe too low?)

Total Cholesterol: 122
HDL Cholesterol: 49
LDL Cholesterol:64
Triglycerides : 44

Another thing to keep in mind is that, somewhere between 75 and 80% of our cholesterol is produced by the liver and doesn't come from our dietary cholesterol what so ever. In fact, avoiding cholesterol in the diet in some cases could cause the liver to start producing even more cholesterol.

Most doctors will consider HDL-C to be the "good" cholesterol and LDL-C to be the "bad" cholesterol. Ideal levels are supposed to be below 100 for LDL. If your LDL goes too high, that is when the doctor starts to see a problem.

The thing is, I recently found out that it turns out to be more complicated than that. Turns out the latest research has shown that finding out the LDL particle number, not LDL cholesterol, is the better way of predicting heart disease.

This is a good article that sums it up.

Raw pork and chicken worry me. I've heard of people getting miserably sick after eating at some sushi places. Maybe that is rare but I still don't trust it..lol.

Raw beef, on the other hand, I know that if you get your meat from the right sources, you can probably get away with eating it raw without problems. But it probably has to be from the right place.

r u serious? .....cotdamn. And I thought one a day was overdoing it. My total cholesterol was 135 the last time I had any blood work done on myself, which was about five years ago lol. A while ago I read that not all LDL forms of cholesterol are the same and that the different types of cholesterol have been oversimplified and misunderstood by the public. I don't know much about that, though.

I'll be checking that article you posted.

Yeah, I always made sure my meats were well-done, until fairly recently. I enjoy a good medium-rare steak pretty often now. I can't stand when it's under-cooked though, with obvious blood and the after taste of blood that accompanies it. I've been grilling a lot myself lately, that way I can control exactly how rare my meats are.

Raw chicken and pork should worry everyone, regardless of the method of preparation and sanitary procedures. As for traditional sushi, you have very little to be concerned about so long as you know the restaurant has strict sanitary guidelines and fresh product, which usually, you can tell by observing the chefs, fish and the general environment.

I've been eating sushi for years and have never had an incident of food poisoning or anything of the like.

I highly recommend that article to anybody that cares about their health and heart disease(the number one killer of Americans).

Usually when it comes to LDL, you'll hear that you want to avoid the "small dense inflamed" LDL particles. But as this article points out, the amount of LDL particles(LDL-P number) is the what you need to know. Everyone should have their doctor run that test for LDL-P.

My cholesterol levels are keen. I had issues with sugar level for being overweight and having a lot of belly fat. This was 2011 when I walked into the hospital with 435 blood sugar. I refused to take the medication they offered and instead bwpegan walking and gradually made the life long commitment of working out. Started at 3 days now @ 4 days per week. I have been consistently keeping my levels between 77 and 89 and lost about 60lbs with goal of 100... This is both fasting and non fasting levels. So like one of you said earlier post its about your level of activity. Also positive thinking has a huge impact on how healthy you are. As of recently I have been courting the Ayurvedic methods...will keep you posted on that.

Miyagi's has that all you can eat, and the sushi is definitely on point for sure. But, I never cared about the place, mainly due to it's location. When I go eat sushi, I want to relax and be in a nice environment. Ocean Blue in Redlands has been the only place on my list for a while for that very reason. Nice and clean, good area, and good prices. I recommend it. Oh, and here in Riverside there's Asahi off of Van Buren, all you can eat for just $17 before 12pm on weekends.

Wow, 435 is super high. But definitely, a healthy life-style first begins with a positive mindset. I started talking daily 3 mile walks with the wife and even mountain biking a couple years ago. I've dropped close to 20 pounds.

What's Ayurvedic methods?

Good shit my dude. I want to take up mt biking soon. But there is a part of me that equates it with mt, lions lol silly I know...but seriously. Yeh 435 is what they called coma levels or stroke. Indefinitely I was told I'm type 2. But I did a dramatic change and even after eating a candy bar my levels stay normal. I'm hoping to beat this thing and not die of heart attack or stroke ya know. Ayurvedic? Ancient Indian weight management. It's a combination of herbal tea with turmeric, cinnamon, cumin, curry...so forth. Not really the best tasting concoctions and there are pills but I try to stay away from pills. Also it's having very light breakfast staying away from heavy food...usually just fruit or some liquid nutrients...or egg whites. The method is having 50% of your fat and calorie intake at luvpnch time. 25% at dinner. The science is obvious...you are burning the most calories midday. Check it out...tons of info online...and it is fool proof.

And you're not wrong for thinking that LOL. Honestly, it really depends on where you go biking. I've hit all the areas in this region without having any major problems with the wild life.

Areas like Box springs mountain (Riverside), Crafton Hills/Yucaipa region park, the Loma Linda hills, Running springs/Big bear, etc. I encountered a bear once about a quarter of a mile in the distance from me while in Running springs, but nothing happened.

There's supposedly mountain lions all over box springs in Riverside, but I've never encountered anything other than wild donkeys roaming the area. But yeah, mountain biking is excellent cardio, just make sure you start small and work your way up before you decide to tackle a several thousand foot high peak or something.

I'm going to have check out that Ayurvedic method, it sounds interesting. Cray, you ever hear about that one?

No I haven't.

But I have read a lot of positive things on turmeric, cinnamon, etc.. There is a lot of promising research coming out on these natural herbs and spices. Especially on tumeric, which is starting to be known to fight cancer or hopefully prevent cancer, among many other diseases. The hard part is trying to find out the right amounts for people to take in order to have a beneficial effect and how to take it for it actually work well enough. But these are definitely good things to add to the diet.

Good work on the blood sugar improvement niners. It's always nice to see people take their health into their own hands and not let themselves become another victim and statistic.

I too have blood sugar issues that I'm working on. I managed to greatly improve mine but stress usually limits me. I don't have diabetes but was diagnosed with "pre-diabetes."

Right, that's what they diagnosed me with before I was as high as I was. The doctor told me to lay off mayo and cheese and things. For the most part I did. But heredity is a mutha. Pops, moms, both grandmas, all have/ had it. Inevitable.

lol.. I will say this though, when it comes to red meat, I would be careful when grilling or pan frying the meat at high temperatures. It is thought that, the chemicals produced when cooking at high heats (heterocyclic amines) are carcinogens that are linked to cancer. So the best thing is to not overcook at high heats and maybe cut off the most burned parts to limit exposure. And supposedly, the vitamins and minerals are better absorbed the less the meat is cooked. Also never use vegetable oil to cook.
