SAN BERNARDINO - San Bernardino police arrested a San Bernardino teen and launched a manhunt for another suspect in the slaying of a 6-year-old boy, the city's youngest victim to die in a gang-related shooting in recent history.
Police credited more than a dozen calls from tipsters to crime-reporting hot lines and round-the-clock work by detectives to the arrest of the 17-year-old boy, whose name was not released because of his age.

"Our department has been working aggressively and relentlessly to develop leads in this case," said San Bernardino police Chief Keith Kilmer.

The suspect, identified by police as a documented gang member, was arrested at his home Wednesday. Police said they planned to submit a case to prosecutors Thursday

Police seized two small-caliber rifles at his residence that matched the caliber of rounds recovered at the scene of Sunday's shooting in the 2000 block of West 14th Street.

San Bernardino police Lt. Jarrod Burguan said officers are awaiting results from ballistics testing to determine if either of those weapons were used in the killing.

Through witnesses and telephone tips, police identified a second suspect in the killing as Kenneth Scott, 20, who has ties to San Bernardino, Victorville and Adelanto. He is also a documented gang member, police said.

Burguan said Scott was last seen driving a 2007 silver Chevy Malibu with the license plate number 5UAL377.

The shooting occurred on the city's

A driver pulled up and someone in the vehicle opened fire on the crowd, hitting 6-year-old Amarion Adams, Willis McDowell, 47, Sherman Brown, 49, Ronnell Waller, 47, and Steven Roberson, 41. Amarion Adams died at Loma Linda University Medical Center about 10 a.m. Wednesday.
McDowell remained hospitalized in grave condition. The other three victims were expected to survive.

Despite the large crowd gathered at the location, police initially had trouble getting witnesses to come forward to help in the investigation.

But pleas from Amarion's family motivated people to pick up the phone, Kilmer said.

Fifteen tips poured into anonymous hot lines, which helped officers corroborate leads they collected on the street.

Investigators discovered the shooting was a retaliation for an earlier confrontation between rival gangs.

"We don't believe the victims were the intended targets," Burguan said.

The incident was so shocking, it convinced members of the San Bernardino Police Officers' Association to offer a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the shooters.

The union said police plan to pay the reward out of their own salaries to cover

Amarion's aunt, Donna Moreno, along with the boy's cousins, Sharon Hodge and Joyce Williams, stood alongside police and city dignitaries during a press conference Thursday, seeking more help from the public to help detectives find Scott.

"Please put yourself in our situation, if it was your child, your cousin, your nephew," Moreno said.

Amarion's cousins held hands with Moreno as she recalled the death of the 6-year-old, saying "our little angel is gone to be with our Lord." And she pleaded with members of gangs to stop the violence.

"We don't want any more of our San Bernardino children to be killed," she said. "Murderers, you need to stop."
