Riverside police are investigating a shooting that took place in a shopping center parking lot this afternoon.
One person was confirmed shot outside the Big Lots store at Arlington Avenue and Madison Street, said Lt. Guy Toussaint. Investigators are trying to determine if another person, who showed up at the emergency room at Parkview Community Hospital with gunshot wounds was also a victim of the shooting.
The confirmed victim was taken to Riverside Community Hospital. Toussaint said he thought the injuries were not life-threatening.
Several people have been detained in the Big Lots parking lot, and officers are trying to separate out the witnesses from the suspects, he said.

UPDATE: Few details emerge in Riverside shooting

Officers investigating an afternoon shooting in Riverside have unearthed a few more details but are still trying to determine motive.
Officers were called at 5:48 p.m. to a report of a shooting in the 4000 block of Madison Street, said Riverside police Lt. Guy Toussaint.
It appears that two groups of men confronted each other in the parking lot of the Big Lots store at Arlington Avenue and Madison Street and a fight broke out, Toussaint said by telephone.
During the fight a member of one of the groups produced a handgun with which he accidentally shot himself in the hand, Toussaint said. He then shot a member of the opposing group in the arm.
The gunman left the scene, eventually managing to hitch a ride with someone who took him to Parkview Community Hospital, Toussaint said. The gunshot victim at the scene was taken by ambulance to Riverside Community Hospital.
"All those involved in the fight are detained at this time," Toussaint said, though no one has been officially arrested.
"I do believe (the gunman) will be arrested for assault with a deadly weapon, based on witness statements," he said, "but the investigation is ongoing."
Police still don't know what triggered the fight, he said.
