Two reputed Mexican Mafia members have been convicted on racketing charges in a federal case that accused them of overseeing the actions of the main street gang in Ontario, federal prosecutors say.
The nine-day trial ended Monday, Jan. 27, with the convictions of 50-year-old Armando “Mando” Barajas of Pomona and 43-year-old Juan “Nito” Gil who was serving a 10-year prison term when he was indicted in 2010, U.S. Attorney’s spokesman Thom Mrozek said in a written statement.
Both defendants are leaders of the Black Angels, according to the statement. The gang is a multi-generational Latino street gang that is blamed for distributing methamphetamine and heroin.
“Leaders of the gang extorted drug dealers who, in exchange for paying ‘taxes’ or ‘rent,’ were allowed to operate in gang-controlled territory,” the statement says. “The gang’s drug trafficking … extended to smuggling narcotics into prisons for use by incarcerated Mexican Mafia and Black Angels members.”
Barajas controlled the gang’s activities, including drug distribution, Mrozek wrote.
Gil helped control gang activities by communicating directions through people linked to the gang, Mrozek wrote.
