Gang member found guilty in murder

RANCHO CUCAMONGA -- A Chino gang member was convicted of second-degree murder on Monday for shooting a member of his own gang.
Steven Garcia, 43, shot 32-year-old Joseph Orosco last year during a meeting of the Chino Sinners after both men accused each other of being snitches.

The shooting occurred in an alley near the 13200 block of Fourth Street in Chino.

Garcia claimed during his trial that the April 3, 2005, shooting was self-defense, but the explanation didn't fly, Deputy District Attorney Gregory Tavill said.

"He was too far away from the victim when he shot him, and the victim was retreating," Tavill said.

Jurors deliberated for parts of three days before announcing their verdict Monday in West Valley Superior Court.

Garcia faces more than 70 years to life in prison. A sentencing date has not been set
