A San Bernardino homicide suspect who has been on the run for nearly a year was captured Wednesday evening in Louisiana.

Robert Harold McKinney, 20, was standing outside an apartment in Monroe, La., when police arrived to investigate a tip about drug activity, Monroe police Maj. Jimmy Fried said.

"Officers removed a Glock .357-caliber pistol from (McKinney's) pocket," Fried said. "As officers searched his person, it was discovered that he had two clear bags of suspected marijuana in his front right jacket pocket."

McKinney told officers his name was Montez Taylor.

Police figured out the man's real name and learned he was a fugitive charged with murder in California.

San Bernardino police named McKinney a suspect in the April 11 drive-by shooting death of Jarrett Ojomoh, 18.

Ojomoh was walking with a friend on 19th Street approaching Medical Center Drive when gunfire came from two passing vehicles.

Ojomoh was struck and collapsed in the doorway of his girlfriend's apartment in the 1800 block of Dorjill Place. The friend was unharmed.

Police have not released a motive.

The death shook Ojomoh's relatives, who said he had no ties to gangs or drugs.

When he was gunned down, Ojomoh, who often stayed with his aunt in the area, was going to help his mother at work.

San Bernardino police were not sure how long McKinney had been in Louisiana.

the charges they have him on, there will be extradition hearings and we'll bring him back here to face the murder," San Bernardino police Lt. Scott Paterson said.

He said other charges could be considered.

"He had fled from the area here to avoid prosecution, and that's something that the district attorney will look at," Paterson said.
