A hard-hitting shock-u-mentary about the rise of violence in the home of the brave. From the assassinations of John F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King and Robert Kennedy to the violent protests against the Vietnam war. From the ritual murders by Charles Manson’s ‘family’ to the rise of serial killers like Ted Bundy, Son Of Sam and John Wayne Gacy. From random sniper attacks on innocent civilians to the mass suicide of the Jim Jones cult in Guyana. THE KILLING OF AMERICA shows the real violence of America and the truth is often more disturbing than fiction.

trivia facts

*

The film has never been officially released or publicly shown in America.

*

The films producers originally made this for the Japanese market, where films about death and destruction were doing big business at the time. However they decided to keep the film factual and not exploitive, which actually works in its favour.

*

Producer Leonard Schrader also scripted the 1985 drama "Kiss of the Spider Woman" and is currently a scriptwriting teacher at the American Film Institute. He is also the brother of Director/Writer Paul Schrader, who wrote "Raging Bull" and "Taxi Driver".

*

The Buffalo Springfield Song "For What it's Worth", which plays over the scenes of the anti-Vietnam demos, was actually written about the heavy handedness of the police and government officials towards the people in these protest marches and is frequently used in films about the Vietnam war.

*

The producers got the idea for the film after reading a news article that the annual rate of murders in America had remained about the same up until the assassination of President Kennedy, but had steadily risen each year since.

It is definitely worth a look tho part 11 might be incomplete. The segments on the Hillside Stranglers (Kenneth Bianchi and Angelo Buono) and Ted Bundy are quite chilling and candid, I'll have to say Edmund Kemper really steals the show in that portion of doc. With an IQ of 136, Kemper decapitated and performed autopsies on his victims than practiced cannibalism and necrophilia including keeping the victim's dismembered heads for days on end to talk to and to sleep with. Quite a fascinating serial killer because he is so lucid, frank, and intelligent about the subject of himself and his crimes, there is interviews of him posted on youtube.

Yeah, it was a decent Spike Lee flick.

Some great serial killer/mass murder movies are:

In Cold Blood (1967) Perry Smith/Dick Hickock
The Boston Strangler (1968) Albert DeSalvo
The Honeymoon Killers (1970) Raymond Fernandez/Martha Brooks
Deranged (1974) boy is this an obscure delightful gem, the lead character Ezra Cobb is adapted from Ed Gein, generally the most accurate portrayal of Ed Gein on celluloid to date, this is available on the currently out of print MGM flipper dvd with Motel Hell
Helter Skelter (1976) The Manson Family
Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer (1986) Henry Lee Lucas
The Deliberate Stranger (1986) Ted Bundy
To Catch A Killer (1992) John Wayne Gacy
Citizen X (1995) Andrei Chikatilo
Dahmer (2002) Jeffrey Dahmer
Monster (2003) Aileen Wuornos
