Man fatally shot by Colton police

Colton police shot and killed a man in San Bernardino this morning when he tried to run over officers with a stolen car, police said.

Police tried to stop the man shortly before 1:30 a.m. when they saw him driving in Colton. He eventually pulled over in San Bernardino near the corner of Pepper Avenue and Mill Street, said Colton police Detective Ray Mendez.

San Bernardino police say the driver put the vehicle in reverse during the stop and tried to hit the officers. He rammed two Colton police vehicles.

"He came back at the officers at a high rate of speed," said San Bernardino police Lt. Paul Williams.

An officer opened fire, striking the driver. He died at the scene.

A woman who was riding in the vehicle with the man suffered minor injuries during the incident and was taken to an area hospital.

She was detained by authorities but it was unknown if she was going to be arrested, Mendez said.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department is investigating the shooting.
