Magnesium - The Miracle Mineral

Post  TumbleWeed on Tue Nov 05, 2013 3:02 am

Magnesium is the body's most important mineral. Over the past 100 years, magnesium has become the most depleted mineral on earth.

“Every known illness is associated with a magnesium deficiency and magnesium is the most critical mineral required for electrical stability of every cell in the body. A magnesium deficiency may be responsible for more diseases than any other nutrient.” Dr. Norman Shealy

Magnesium is more important than calcium, potassium or sodium and regulates all three of them. Millions suffer daily from magnesium deficiency without even knowing it.

Every single cell in the human body demands adequate magnesium to function, or it will perish. Soft tissue containing the highest concentrations of magnesium in the body include the brain and the heart—two organs that produce a large amount of electrical activity, and which can be especially vulnerable to magnesium insufficiency.

So why is it that few doctors ever mention magnesium? Perhaps they're not taught about it in medical school. They seem to know about sodium, potassium and calcium but pathetically little, if anything, about magnesium. Might it be because Big Pharma does not want them to know about the miracle mineral? After all, Big Pharma relies on disease for their immoral profits, not on our health.

So, what does magnesium do for the body that Big Pharma does not want you to know?

The top five health benefits of magnesium are:

1. Magnesium may reverse osteoporosis
Multiple research studies conducted have suggested that calcium supplemented with magnesium improves bone mineral density. Magnesium deficiency alters calcium metabolism and the hormones that regulate calcium, resulting in osteoporosis. Intake of recommended levels of magnesium is important because it averts osteoporosis.

2. Magnesium prevents cardiovascular diseases

One of the most important benefits of magnesium is that it is associated with lowering the risk of coronary heart diseases. Dietary surveys have suggested that sufficient magnesium intake may reduce the chance of having a stroke. Magnesium deficiency increases the risk of abnormal heart rhythms, which increases the risk of complications after a heart attack. Therefore, consuming recommended amounts of magnesium dietary supplements may be beneficial to the cardiovascular system.

3. Magnesium regulates high blood pressure (Hypertension)
Magnesium plays a key role in regulating blood pressure naturally. Magnesium supplements and a diet including plenty of fruits and vegetables, which are good sources of potassium and magnesium, are consistently associated with lowering blood pressure.

4. Magnesium treats diabetes
Studies show that individuals with a magnesium deficiency have a risk of developing type-2 diabetes and severe diabetic retinopathy. Magnesium aids in carbohydrate metabolism and influences the release and activity of insulin, thereby controlling blood glucose levels. It has been proven that for every 100 milligrams of increase in magnesium daily intake, there was a 15 percent decrease in the risk of developing type-2 diabetes.

5. Magnesium treats migraines, insomnia, and depression
The numerous magnesium health benefits also include the treatment of migraines, insomnia, and symptoms of depression. Magnesium is also known to cure severe forms of psychiatric dysfunctions including panic attacks, stress, anxiety, and undue agitations. Magnesium supplements considerably reduce the severity of such attacks and may also help in reducing the rate of recurrence.

Magnesium is responsible for over 300 chemical reactions in the body. It helps maintain normal muscle and nerve function. It keeps your heart beating steadily. And, it helps to build a healthy immune system. Magnesium is a crucial element that your body needs to function at even the most basic levels. Think of magnesium as the relaxation mineral. Anything that is tight, irritable, crampy, and stiff – whether it is a body part or even a mood – is a sign of magnesium deficiency. Here are some of the symptoms of magnesium deficiency:

ADD
Angina
Anxiety & panic attacks
Asthma
Autism
Back pain
Blood clots
Chronic fatigue
Constipation
Cystitis (bladder spasms)
Depression
Diabetes
Fatigue
Food cravings
Fibromyalgia

Heart disease
Headaches
High blood pressure
High cholesterol
Hypoglycemia
Infertility (both men and women)
Inflammation
Insomnia
Irritability
Irritable bladder
Irritable bowel syndrome
Kidney stones
Menstrual cramps

Migraines
Muscle cramps or twitches
Muscle weakness
Obesity
Osteoporosis
Palpitations
PMS
Reflux
Restlessness
Sensitivity to loud noises
Tooth decay
Trouble swallowing
Type A personality

I highlighted a few in red for a reason. Imagine what the pharmaceutical industry would lose if doctors would prescribe magnesium instead of the prescription poisons they do. It's all about the $.

Low magnesium levels have been found to be the best predictor of heart disease, contrary to the traditional belief that cholesterol or saturated fat play the biggest roles.

Research scientist Andrea Rosanoff, PhD., and her colleagues conducted a detailed review of cardiovascular disease research, using studies dating back to 1937. The current review is based upon work that was started by Midred Seelig, MD, who studied the link between magnesium and cardiovascular disease for more than 40 years.

Previous research has revealed low magnesium to be linked with all known cardiovascular risk factors like:

high blood pressure
arterial plaque build-up
calcification of soft tissues
cholesterol
hardening of the arteries

This implies that the real culprit of cardiovascular disease has been low magnesium levels, while historically, experts have blamed a high-saturated fat diet and high cholesterol.

-----------------------------

Dr. Andrea Rosanoff said:

"By 1957 low magnesium was shown to be, strongly, convincingly, a cause of atherogenesis and the calcification of soft tissues. But this research was widely and immediately ignored as cholesterol and the high saturated-fat diet became the culprits to fight. Ever since this early 'wrong turn', more and more peer-reviewed research has shown that low magnesium is associated with all known cardiovascular risk factors, such as cholesterol and high blood pressure."

Decades of elevated calcium intake have not been balanced with increasing magnesium intake and in a U.S. population where most adults are not receiving their daily magnesium requirement, dietary calcium-to-magnesium ratios are increasing. Therefore studies are revealing that calcium supplements that are not in balance with magnesium, elevate the risk of heart disease.

Carolyn Dean, MD, ND, and Medical Advisory Board member of the nonprofit Nutritional Magnesium Association (www.nutritionalmagnesium.org), adds:

"That cholesterol is not the cause must be obvious, since heart disease is still the number one killer in America in spite of over two decades of statin use. The fact that low levels of magnesium are associated with all the risk factors and symptoms of heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol, heart arrhythmia, angina and heart attack˜can no longer be ignored; the evidence is much too compelling."

Magnesium is one of the few supplements I take pretty much everyday since it is hard to get enough of it in food. I think pretty much everybody should take magnesium daily. It really does make a big difference in preventing all sorts of health problems. And a lot of new info is coming out on "Vitamin K2", which I think can really go a long way. Probably post something on it later.

For those who aren't familiar with this mineral, and If for whatever reason you can't take the supplements, which should be either magnesium citrate, gylcinate, taurate or aspartate as they're what the body can absorb the most, then you can also take Espom salt baths since Magnesium can absorbed through the skin as well.  Or If you live near clean ocean water, a daily swim will provide you with all the magnesium your body needs. Don't bother with Magnesium oxide, since it won't be absorbed by the body as well, and usually just acts like a laxative more than anything.
