Banning police arrested three 13-year-old boys Thursday who investigators say admitted to raping a girl in a park playground as she was walking home from school.

The 13-year-old girl was walking through Roosevelt Williams Park at 5:30 p.m. Monday when she was confronted by three boys she knew at Nicolet Middle School, Banning Police Chief Leonard Purvis said.

As she walked through the park at dusk, the boys grabbed her and began to sexually fondle her, Purvis said.

The boys then grabbed her arms and forced her down. She told police that the boys continued to grope her and one boy raped her as the other two held her down.

"This is a very traumatic incident for any child to go through, we're hoping she's able to get counseling and proper care," Purvis said. "You would think that there's some level of safety there. For that to happen, that's a tragedy."

All three boys admitted to participating in the rape when interviewed by police at Nicolet Wednesday morning, Purvis said. The girl identified her attackers and was taken to a hospital where she was treated for injuries.

School officials suspended the three boys, who were booked Thursday into Juvenile Hall and are awaiting charges. The boys were not identified because they are juveniles

The case will be reviewed by the Riverside County district attorney's office and probation department to determine whether the boys can be tried as adults.

Though the attack appears to be an isolated incident, police have been working with school officials to notify parents to be watchful and encouraging students not to walk home alone.

Police also are working to increase surveillance around schools and parks.

"I think every parent still needs to be vigilant and be aware of where their children are at all times, so we don't have a situation again where they're all alone and someone could be victimized," Purvis said.
