Teen gets hearing in alleged shooting at San Bernardino cop

A teenager suspected of firing a gun at a San Bernardino police officer in June is scheduled for a preliminary hearing Wednesday.

The now 16-year-old defendant, Michael Anthony Rey, is set to appear for the hearing in San Bernardino Superior Court. He has been charged with attempted murder.

Lawyers in the case announced Friday that they were ready for the hearing, according to court records. At a preliminary hearing, a judge will listen to witness testimony and review evidence to determine if sufficient evidence exists to support the charges.

Police say an officer was patrolling on Seventh Street shortly before midnight on June 18 when he saw two people loitering near Seventh and L streets. The officer recognized Rey and knew he had an arrest warrant for violating probation, according to police.

The pair of men fled, and prosecutors allege Rey shot at officer Edward Andrade, nearly striking him. Rey temporarily escaped, but he was arrested the next day in the 1000 block of West Seventh Street.

After being taken into custody, Rey was transported to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center where he was found to have two broken arms, a fractured skull, a black eye and other injuries, the boy's mother Christy Luna said in June.

Luna denied her son fired at the officer and said the probation violation against Rey stemmed from his placement in a boy's home.
