Shooting at Sikh temple in Wisconsin leaves at least 7 dead, including gunman

Seven people, including a gunman, were killed in a shooting at a Sikh temple near Milwaukee Sunday in what police say is being treated as an act of domestic terrorism.
Police were called to respond to the shooting at the Sikh Temple of Wisconsin in the suburb of Oak Creek on Sunday morning, when witnesses said several dozen people were gathering for a service.

Sunny Singh, 21, of Milwaukee, said a friend pulled into the temple's parking lot, heard shots and saw two people fall down. The friend then saw the shooter reload his weapons and head to the temple's entrance, Singh said.
Oak Creek Police Chief John Edwards said the shooting suspect ambushed and opened fire on an 20-year veteran officer who was attending to a victim at the scene. Another officer then shot and killed the suspect.

Greenfield Police Chief Bradley Wentlandt said the officer who was ambushed was shot multiple times and he is being treated in surgery, but is expected to recover.
Wentlandt said four people were found dead inside the temple, while three, including the suspected shooter, were found dead outside. Tactical units went through the temple, and authorities do not believe a second shooter was involved, Wentlandt said. All people have been cleared out of the temple.

At a news conference late Sunday afternoon, Edwards released no information about the suspect, including his identity or a possible motive. But beginning at 5:25pm ET, the FBI, the ATF, the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Department and Cudahy police began searching a house in Cudahy, Wis., believed to be linked to the suspect, WITI's Brandon Cruz reports.
Prior to starting the search at the 3700 block of Holmes Ave., police asked two blocks of residents to leave the area or remain indoors.
Edwards said the FBI will lead the investigation because the shootings are being treated as an act of domestic terrorism.

Three other shooting victims, all men, were taken in critical condition to Froederdt Hospital in Milwaukee, the main trauma center for the area, Chief Medical Officer Lee Biblo said. He added that they were all being treated for bullet wounds: one to the chest, one to the extremities and the face and one to the neck.
Police released few details about other victims, but family members talked about discussions with some of those inside.
Sukhwindar Nagra, of Racine, said he called his brother-in-law's phone and a priest at the temple answered and told him that his brother-in-law had been shot, along with three priests.
Gurpreet Kaur, 24, of Oak Creek, said her mother and a group of about 14 other women were preparing a meal in the temple kitchen when the gunman entered and started firing. Kaur said her mother felt two bullets fly by her as the group fled to the pantry. Her mother suffered what Kaur thought was shrapnel wound in her foot.

A White House official said President Obama was notified of the shooting and is continuing to receive updates.
"At this difficult time, the people of Oak Creek must know that the American people have them in our thoughts and prayers, and our hearts go out to the families and friends of those who were killed and wounded," Obama said in a statement.

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker also canceled a Monday event in Green Bay after hearing about the shooting.
"Our hearts go out to the victims and their families, as we all struggle to comprehend the evil that begets this terrible violence," he said in a statement. "At the same time, we are filled with gratitude for our first responders, who show bravery and selflessness as they put aside their own safety to protect our neighbors and friends."
County Alderman Dan Jakupczyk told Fox News that the people at the temple have been "good citizens."

“Since I’ve been alderman, for about three years, there has never been any trouble, or any problems,” he said.
One of the temple's committee members, Ven Boba Ri, told the Journal Sentinel that the shooting was very sad, and he has been fielding calls all morning from around the world, including India.
"Sikhism is such a peaceful religion. We have suffered for generations, in India and even here."

The NYPD also announced, out of caution, a heightened police presence at Sikh temples in New York City.
Sikhism is a monotheistic faith that was founded in South Asia more than 500 years ago. It has roughly 27 million followers worldwide. Observant Sikhs do not cut their hair; male followers often cover their heads with turbans -- which are considered sacred -- and refrain from shaving their beards. There are roughly 500,000 Sikhs in the U.S., according to estimates. The majority worldwide live in India.

Oak Creek is south of Milwaukee along Lake Michigan.

Randomly, it seems kinda odd that suddenly mass shootings happen to be "in style". This and the recent Batman shooting make me sick. I'm sure the media will spin this one as some redneck or white supremacist who went loopy and shot up a temple.

CNN is already reporting the shooting as a "domestic terrorist-type incident". Rolling Eyes.....neuro-linguistic programming in action.

Another interesting bit, and I don't mean to go out on the deep end with this, but it's something to consider; two eyewitness to the Sikh temple shooting in Wisconsin say that a team of four men dressed in black carried out the massacre, contradicting the official narrative that a lone gunman was the culprit. Seen below.

The man above was on the scene as it happened, his uncle was shot. He clearly says the shooters were "4 white males dressed in all black clothing".

"There are multiple shooters, multiple people involved, it was a very well coordinated thing, Wasn't haphazard". From yet another eyewitness. Again, this contradicts the official reports of a lone-gunman.

Now before somebody accuses me of jumping to "conspiracies", note that I'm not necessarily claiming this is a government operation here. What I'm saying is that these incidents require more careful scrutiny. Use your heads, examine the facts, take whatever the media is reporting with a grain of salt.

Some people are just crazy, that's a given. No conspiracy needed. But when certain pieces of information and evidence don't match with reality, that is when further scrutiny should be employed.

That being said, I don't fully believe its a government operation yet, at least directly. But I definitely believe the government will exploit this incident to their benefit.

What the mainstream media is currently reporting.

(Reuters) - The gunman who killed six people at a Sikh temple in southern Wisconsin was a former U.S. serviceman, a law enforcement official said on Monday, and a monitor of extremists said the shooter had links to racist groups.

The gunman, identified as Wade Michael Page, shot dead six people and seriously wounded three, including a police officer, at the Sikh Temple of Wisconsin on Sunday as worshippers prepared for religious services. Police shot dead the gunman.

Although the identity of the tall, bald, white suspect in his 40s was not officially released, Fox News said Page, 40, was a former soldier. Page at one time was stationed at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, Fox said, citing unnamed sources.

CNN said Page legally owned the gun that was used in the shooting.

A law enforcement official who asked not to be identified said the "name that is out there is accurate."

Authorities said they were treating the attack as an act of domestic terrorism.

Wade had been a member of the racist skinhead band End Apathy, based in Fayetteville, North Carolina, in 2010, said Heidi Beirich, director of the intelligence project at the Southern Poverty Law Center in Montgomery, Alabama.

Wade also tried to buy goods from the National Alliance, a neo-Nazi group, in 2000, she said.

"That's all we know about Wade. We are still digging through our files," she said.

A U.S. official who asked not to be identified confirmed that Wade had been in the military and said it was before the September 11, 2001, attacks on the United States.

Police were searching an apartment at a duplex in the Cudahy neighborhood near Milwaukee, presumed to be the residence of the gunman. Generators and floodlights were set up along the street and a bomb squad was on the scene.

The names of the victims were not made public pending notification of relatives, although members said the president of the congregation and a priest were among the victims.

Oak Creek Police Chief John Richards told CNN the suspect had a military background but gave no more details.

The suspect "lived in a community neighboring ours, we're doing a 24-hour backcheck, just to get any idea what he was up to, what he was doing," Edwards said.

"Right now there is no indication that there were any red flags."

The wounded police officer had been shot eight or nine times in the face and extremities at close range with a handgun. None of the wounds were life-threatening, Edwards said.

9MM HANDGUN

Authorities said the gunman had used a 9mm semi-automatic pistol, which was recovered at the scene. They were trying to track the origin of the weapon.

Wisconsin has some of the most permissive gun laws in the country. It passed a law in 2011 allowing citizens to carry a concealed weapon.

Jagjit Singh Kaleka, the brother of the president of the temple, who was among the six Sikhs killed, said he had no idea what the motive was for the attack.

"But we know the more assault weapons we distribute the more situations like this we will have," he said. The United States had a ban on certain assault weapons but it expired in 2004. The attack came just over two weeks after a gunman killed 12 people at a theater in Aurora, Colorado, where they were watching a screening of new Batman movie "The Dark Knight Rises."

In January 2011, a gunman killed six people in an attack on an event by then Representative Gabrielle Giffords in Tucson, Arizona. Giffords was shot in the head but survived.

American Sikhs said they have often been singled out for harassment, and occasionally violent attack, since the September 11 attacks because of their colorful turbans and beards.

The September 11 attacks were carried out by Muslims linked to the al Qaeda militant group led by Osama bin Laden. Sikhs are not Muslim but many Americans do not know the difference, members of the Sikh community said.

Some witnesses to the Wisconsin shooting said the suspect had a tattoo marking the 2001 attacks. Authorities confirmed he had tattoos but said they were not sure exactly what the tattoos illustrated.

There are 500,000 or more Sikhs in the United States but the community in Wisconsin is small, about 2,500 to 3,000 families, said local Sikhs.

The Sikh faith is the fifth-largest in the world, with more than 30 million followers. It includes belief in one God and that the goal of life is to lead an exemplary existence.

The temple in Oak Creek was founded in October 1997 and has a congregation of 350 to 400 people.

"These people were going to church. Two weeks ago, it was people going to a movie. When is it going to end?" said Ray Zirkle, who came from Racine, Wisconsin, with his wife to light votive candles near the site of the shooting.
