8:53 a.m.: Rialto gang raid proclaimed a success
By Stacia Glenn and Melissa Pinion-Whitt
Article Created: 07/02/2008 08:56:45 AM PDT

RIALTO - Rialto Police Chief Mark Kling touted a gang sweep as a success this morning following the arrest of numerous suspected South Side Rialto gang members.

The arrests coincided with the filing of an injunction by the District Attorney's Office against the gang, a first for the county.

"We recovered a lot of guns, we recovered a lot of narcotics, but most importantly, we recovered a lot of gang members who are really instrumental in recruiting the youth of our community as future gang members," Kling said. "We're going to stop that."

Such injunctions typically bar gang members from gathering in certain areas and participating in gang activity.

The borders of Rialto's injunction are Willow Avenue west to the city limits and from Foothill Boulevard south to Valley Boulevard.

The culmination of the year-long operation drew about 120 officers from agencies around Southern California, including law enforcement from the Coachella Valley, Corona, Montclair and Cathedral City.

Authorities hit 15 homes in 4-city sweep

RIALTO - They sat on grass damp with morning dew, plastic ties wrapped around wrists hidden behind backs that pressed against a pristine white picket fence.

All 15 had just moments earlier been sleeping inside the blue and white house nestled in a cul-de-sac on South Iris Avenue.

The Rialto police SWAT team, however, had been eyeing the suspected gang lair for nearly a year.

They knew the garage door would be open Wednesday morning at the break of dawn. And that's how 15 heavily armed SWAT members were able to rush into the house, quickly locating the pajama-clad clan who dozed inside.

It was the first of 15 homes hit during a four-city sweep Wednesday morning in an effort to initiate an injunction against Rialto's largest and most violent gang - South Side Rialto.

Authorities said the gang, with about 60 active members, has terrorized the community

for three decades and is responsible for several homicides, armed robberies and general mayhem.
"The neighbors don't feel comfortable but they're not comfortable calling the police," said Police Chief Mark Kling, who accompanied his officers on the raid. "We're trying to put a stop to what these people have been doing to this community for way too long."

Fifteen pairs of heavy black boots snaked soundlessly down the sidewalk at 5:38 a.m. toward the house where they expected to find Jason Garfinkel, a reputed shot caller.

They did.

Within a half-hour, law enforcement officers from as far as Montclair and the Coachella Valley stormed 14 other houses of suspected gang members.

Their biggest find appeared to be Cam-Capone, a rapper whose song, "Rialto City," has angered officials since it appeared on YouTube in February.

The song is full of profanity, gang references and features the group drinking alcohol in public, holding guns and pointing them at the camera.

Whispered words of his arrival swirled around the command center, and several officers popped their heads out the door to watch for him.

A patrol car rolled up to the building with a shirtless Capone, whose real name is Steven Camaion, staring blankly out the back window. His expression never changed as officers led the 30-year-old rapper, clad only in baggy brown shorts and dirty white tennis shoes, into the holding room.

The patrol car's trunk popped open, revealing the 18 guns and Altoid container filled with marijuana that authorities said they found inside Capone's house in the 1200 block of West Summit Avenue.

Moments before 6:30 a.m., two Ontario police cars came careening down a street on the city's north end. A bus stopped in the middle of the road as the officers turned onto North Palmetto Road and disappeared around the corner.

They screeched to a halt in front of a well-kept, gray two-story house. The smell of burning rubber lingered in the air as they slammed a battering ram into the front door five times.

The white double-doors flung open and an officer yelled, "Marco, get down here!"

Marco is Marco Aguilar, a South Side Rialto gang member who has earned the nickname "Stomper" because of his penchant for fights, authorities said.

His criminal shenanigans were highlighted in the morning briefing - how he recently pulled a neighbor out of his house and beat him, just for fun, authorities said.

"This is a pretty important arrest," said Detective Joe Viola. "He's actually one of the up-and-comers in the game."

Wearing only blue athletic shorts with his belly hanging over, Aguilar was plopped on the curb in front of his aunt and uncle's house while an officer questioned him.

The officer asked him how many kids he has recruited into the gang.

"I didn't do nothing," Aguilar replied, staring intently at the pavement.

"How long you been in (the gang)?"

"I ain't really in nothing," Aguilar said, making a show of yawning.

"I was asleep. I'm not in the mood to talk."

There was much talk Wednesday, but it was mostly among the 120 law enforcement officers who participated in the sweep stretching through Rialto, San Bernardino, Colton and Redlands.

They bristled over the fact that someone managed to send a warning text that cops were coming to arrest several suspected gang members.

They jokingly asked to take photographs with Capone or to get his autograph.

They scrutinized the display of 22 rifles, shotguns and handguns seized during the sweep.

And then they shook hands, patted backs and spoke of the shield of safety the injunction is expected to bring.

Anybody ever heard of a party crew called H2 or Heavy Hustlers? I was reading the articles and it was saying something about how South Side Rialto just got a little bit bigger from putting these dudes on.
