Yea I think that video said that. But I guess the idea is once the technology is available, it won't matter. People will be printing guns and nobody can stop them.

or when it goes mainstream a system would have to be put in place as to where people got "designs" from. probably buy em in stores and shit like video games

A system wouldn't matter. People hach around systems now to get what they want. If there is a will there is a way.

hacks are easy to track and fix tho. look at the ios, apples operating system. supposedly virus free, and continuous updates make it hard for hacks to stay current. i think they said the last one was unbreakable...jennierock wrote:A system wouldn't matter. I can't argue with that. I am inno way computer savvy. However, I did hear that these 3D printers are the wave of our food future. Off topic, I know, but interesting.

the level of these machines and the types that might be able to produce food someday is light years away. to sythesize edible foods, these machines would have to be able to manipulate various elements on a molecular or even atomic level. right now they just "print" various plastics and soft metals.jennierock wrote:I can't argue with that. If that is the case, then concerning the argument on guns, a plastic or hard paper gun can be made by hand. To fear a printer, or to market the fear of these 3d printers is, for lack of a better word, dumb. The fevor following a horrible incident, like Sandy Hook, is a great way for government to build on people's fear and create more laws that restrict the rights of the people. The news outlets focus on a stupid printer making something that is made in prisons across America, rather then more important subjects that are of actual concern to the people.

I think the concern is more with the convenience of such a machine. One could theoretically mass produce small arms weapons from the home. To do this by hand, you would have to use more malleable plastics which wouldn't be good candidates for making repeat use firearms. 3d printers on the other hand can "print" with much stronger types of plastics.
