SAN BERNARDINO: Man killed, homeless woman wounded in shooting (MeadowBrooks)
Gunfire killed a man and wounded a homeless woman Sunday, March 24, near a San Bearnardino apartment complex about four blocks from City Hall, according to police and witnesses.
The violence erupted moments after noon in a parking lot just west of Meadowbrook Towers, near Second Street and Mountain View Avenue.
Dead is a 25-year-old Los Angeles man, whose name hasn’t been released.
“He knows people here, but we don’t know if he stays here,” homicide Sgt. Gary Robertson said.
The man was among four people gathered in the parking lot when a light-colored SUV drove through and at least one person inside opened fire for no apparent reason, Robertson said.
The wounded man ran to a breezeway, where he collapsed between Cut-N-Edge Barber Shop and True Vine Christian Center. He died at a hospital.
The wounded homeless woman was about 250 yards from the group in the parking lot and apparently was not an intended target of the gunfire.
“She apparently took one in the side,” Robertson said. “It seems like an errant bullet hit her.”
That victim was on the north side of Second Street, in the shadow of the county’s still unfinished new courthouse.
“We heard about 20 shots,” said 58-year-old Richard Burns. “I yelled for my girlfriend to get down.”
But 35-year-old Rachelle Oliveira already had been hit in the right side, Burns said.
He said her wound wasn’t bleeding a lot.
“It looked to me like a 22 (caliber) hole,” Burns said.
