VGA is cool if your laptop doesn't have an HDMI input. If it does though, use it. Component cables only support 480p? Use HDMI for 1080p.

The best deal I saw lately was an LG 40 inch LCD 1080p for about $500. Get an Oppo 980-H DVD player and you've got almost Blu-Ray quality. It comes with an HDMI cable. It upscales to 1080p, supports 7.1 sound, and supports DVD audio. It also ignores watermarks, so you can play any copied DVD's.

After that, get a decent surround sound system that supports DTS and run an optical cable from the receiver to the DVD player. DTS is the shit.
