An Ontario man accused of of shooting at a group of strangers in an alley last year was sentenced to 18 years in state prison this morning after pleading guilty to attempted murder in West Valley Superior Court.
Prosecutors accused Jose Equihua, 18, of confronting a group of men and firing a handgun at them in the area of Fourth Street and Corona Avenue in Ontario.
Two people were struck by bullets during the May 8, 2008 incident, but both victims survived their injuries, said Deputy District Attorney Carolyn Youngberg.
Equihua and a group of three or four other men were driving around the area the night of the incident apparently looking for a fight, Youngberg said.
They came across a group at about 9:30 p.m. who were congregated in an alley south of Fourth Street behind a row of apartment buildings.
The men later told police they had just finished watching a Lakers playoffs game and were socializing in the alley.
Equihua's group drove up to the men in a truck, and Equihua left the vehicle and confronted the men, Youngberg said.
He asked the men where they were from, and they were nonresponsive. He yelled out the names of several local street gangs and returned to the truck, Youngberg said.
When Equihua returned to the truck, the other people with him encouraged him to shoot at the men, Youngberg said.
He fired four or five rounds at them, grazing one man's ankle and hitting another man in the arm, Youngberg said.
Police identified

Equihua as the shooter after officers responded to his home to investigate an unrelated domestic disturbance call, Youngberg said.
The officers saw a truck parked at the house that matched witnesses' descriptions of the vehicle used in the alley shooting.
When they added Equihua's photo to a "six-pack" lineup of potential shooters and showed it to two witnesses, they identified Equihua as the shooter, Youngberg said. He was arrested on May 30, 2008.
As part of his plea bargain, Equihua admitted that he committed the shooting for the benefit of a street gang.
Equihua is a member of an Ontario street gang that was initially conceived as a tagging crew, but later became involved in more serious crime associated with violent street gangs, Youngberg said.
The gang moniker, "N.W.A.," initially stood for "Nocturnal Wild Artists," but was changed when the group became more violent to "Notorious World Assassins," Youngberg said.
Youngberg said she told the men shot during the incident that Equihua would be offered an 18-year prison

What they consider NWA a varrio now so im guessing that the OPD are considering DPR, D Block, WOB, FOS, D2D, D4W, PFA, NFR, WCD and KMS gangs too since any crew is a gang for them from what I hear there is only 3 varrios in Onterio and thats OVS, NSO and ESO and these are just tagbanger/partybanger crews

Hell yeah specially that area in between Grove and Vineyard and Holt and 8th that part of North Ontario is full of them cause the rest of the areas north of the 60 are full with OVS and south of the 60 same story as that Northern part of Onterio except for south of the 60 tagbanger crews are less active than North Ontario tagbanger crews you can say that the ones south of the 60 are more into the art than into trying to start a gang but many of them are begging to tagbang south of the 60

Hah thats right where I grew up and went to elementary school.
Sounds like they were looking for ESO or YGW maybe.
Does anybody know if ESO is still based right there?
That alley and those apartments theyre talking about are the ones YGW used to kick it at everyday.
KESO lives or lived in those apartments right across the street from Corona school and thats where you would find em all right behind it.
Although knowing them, if somebody hit em up, they wouldnt be 'non responsive'..
Those fools used to mouth off even when OVS would hit em up doubt they would keep quiet over a tagbanger hitting em up.

Re: Suspect in Ontario gang shooting gets 18 years
Yeah shit I wonder if KESOE even still lives there anyways.. You can turn down Sacramento off of 4th and go left down that first alley and thats where the ESO 'hood' is hehe. Thats the alley everybody used to kick it in right in the carport behind his apt. Everybody else I knew from there all lived either near Imperial or even further down towards Holt which is all south side.
The whole ESO thing started like a year or two after I moved away so never got involved in that or really knew about it other than asking someone 'Hey whatever happened to..' and getting the response 'Oh theyre a straight gang now and claim ES Onterio'. None of those guys really went anywhere or did anything as it was except for back in the raver days when everybody would party.
They were ALWAYS just right there in the alley hanging out and getting stoned unless they were out mobbing or racking paint somewhere.
They probably just kick it inside now, especially if BAs are moving into the neighborhood haha.
I know KESOEs older brother was from ovs, those guys used to go at it with each other all the time, but since they tried to become a hood, I bet OVS likes em even less now.. Bunch of other guys had familia in OVS too but its been so long since Ive been anywhere near that let alone 'involved' at all I got no clue hehe.
