Two critically injured during San Dimas house party

SAN DIMAS - A house party in a quiet neighborhood turned violent early Monday when two people were shot and critically wounded in the street, officials said.
A juvenile was shot in the chest, and an adult took a bullet to the back and arm. Both were hospitalized in critical condition Monday, but they were expected to survive.

The juvenile was shot from five to 10 feet away with a revolver, said sheriff's Detective Guillermo Guerrero of the San Dimas station.

"It's amazing he is still alive," Guerrero said.

Two people were arrested later Monday in connection with the crime. One was believed to have fired shots, and the other was believed to have driven the gunman away from the house.

Their names were not immediately available. The incident is not gang-related, police said.

The shooting came after an argument broke out about 1:30 a.m. at a house party in the 400 block of Darwood Avenue near Tudor Street, Lt. Craig Boyett said.

About 50 people between the ages of 17 and 21 attended the party, which was thrown by a teenager whose parents were out of town, neighbors said.

The fight started inside the house and moved to the street.

"One of my suspects pulled out a handgun and shot the victim in the chest," Guerrero said. "Then the suspect started shooting randomly, and a second victim was hit."

Police estimate that five to nine shots were fired.

Crime-scene analysts collected blood

samples from the street and inside the house.
Blood was splattered from the corner of Darwood Avenue and Tudor Street to inside the house, where one victim ran to after he was shot, said senior criminalist Mary Keens.

"It's a quiet neighborhood, and we very rarely go down there," Guerrero said. "This is just one of those things where a party got out of hand."

Calls to the homeowner were not returned.

San Dimas Councilman Denis Bertone said the incident is unusual for the city and that it was "very, very disturbing."
