8-year-old may have witnessed fatal shooting in Fontana

An 8-year-old boy may have witnessed the fatal shooting of a man and the wounding of a woman this morning inside a Fontana apartment, authorities said.

“The 8-year-old ran to a neighbor’s and reported there had been a shooting in the apartment,” said Sgt. Jeff Decker of the Fontana Police department.

The shooting occurred about 9 a.m. today at the Arborgate Apartments in the 6500 block of Arrow Boulevard. The names of the victims had not been released, and police were still looking for the shooter. The initial motive was thought to be robbery. Authorities say they are now looking at other possibilities.

It was unclear if the victims were related or if other children were nearby during the violence.

“There were other children in the complex," Decker said. "That’s not unusual for a holiday when the schools are closed. Whether they were witnesses or in the apartment at the time, I don’t know yet.”
