Teenager is arrested for shining a laser light on Fontana Police helicopter

A teenager was arrested for shining a laser light on a Fontana Police Department helicopter which had been searching for a wanted suspect, police said.

On May 8 at about 11 a.m., the helicopter was orbiting in the area of Alder and San Bernardino avenues when the pilot and observer were struck with a laser beam from the ground.

The pilot was able to maintain control of the aircraft and the observer directed ground units to the individual believed to be responsible for the act.

Martin Perez was arrested without incident for the felony crime. He admitted to shining the laser light on the helicopter, police said. He claimed the laser was purchased by a friend from the Internet, police said.

"The Fontana P.D. would like to remind citizens that shining a laser light on any in-flight aircraft is a felony, and punishable by a term in state prison," said Sergeant Billy Green of the Fontana P.D. "Aircraft pilots can be blinded by the light, lose control, and crash. This would not only endanger the passengers on the aircraft but could result in severe injury and death to those on the ground."
