UPDATE: Suspects in Rialto stabbing planned to set victims on fire
Police found two people bound, gagged and
stabbed outside a Rialto home early this
morning.
Officers suspect the victims, both High Desert
residents, were going to be set on fire inside a
vehicle, but their abductors got spooked and
abandoned their plans.
Rialto police captured them close to the crime
scene.
"It appears they were going to kill these two
victims and torch the car with the victims inside,"
said Rialto police Lt. Joe Cirilo. "Something
interrupted that chain of events and the suspects
fled."
Police and San Bernardino County firefighters
received a call at 12:19 a.m. about a shooting in
the 1800 block of West Base Line Road.
Initial reports were that a man had been shot in
the head, but officers found no shell casings or
anyone who had been wounded by gunfire.Officers found a man on a dirt shoulder beside
Base Line. He had duct tape binding his hands
and wrapped around his face, Cirilo said. He had
been stabbed several times in his upper body.
The man told officers another man who had
been stabbed was somewhere on the property.
Police found that man suffering from critical stab
wounds and lying next to a car.
Rialto and Fontana police searched the area and
found four men who are suspected in the crime.
Paramedics took both victims to hospitals for
treatment. Both are listed in serious condition.
Residents nearby awoke to the sound of
gunshots, but didn't know what had happened.
They said a married couple with a 10-year-old
daughter
reside on the one-acre property and the family
usually keeps to themselves.
A neighbor, who didn't want to be identified for
his safety, said he came outside after he heard
the shots.
"I heard someone yelling, 'Somebody help!
Somebody help!'"
Police remained at the scene hours later,
searching a vehicle that was parked along a dirt
driveway on the property. A red gas can sat on
the ground beside the vehicle.
