Police officer shoots and wounds teenager who allegedly had threatened him with a knife in Fontana

A police officer shot and wounded a teenager who allegedly had been threatening him with a knife on Jan. 13, according to the Fontana Police Department.
The incident began at about 11 p.m. in the area of Barbee and Laurel avenues, where an undercover officer was confronted by a man described as a self-admitted gang member who was yelling gang slurs and taunting the officer, police said.
The 18-year-old man, identified as Fernando Brian Chavira of Fontana, advanced toward the officer, allegedly threatening him with a knife, police said.
In fear for his life, the officer fired his service weapon, striking the suspect in the torso, police said.
The suspect's weapon was recovered at the scene.
Chavira was treated for non-life-threatening injuries at Arrowhead Regional Medical Center and later booked at West Valley Detention Center.
The officer, whose name was not released, was not physically injured in the incident.
Following standard procedure in all officer-involved shootings, the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department's detectives are handling the investigation of the incident.
