Re: THE BEST SCI-FI FILMS.....
In no particular order
Star Wars (original trilogy, the prequels sucked tho Revenge of the Sith wasnt bad)
Alien franchise (all of the movies are respectively good)
The Terminator franchise (I hated Rise of the Machines)
The Road (one of the most realistically depicted apocalyptic visions ever made)
Blade Runner
Escape From New York
Escape From L.A.
Mad Max
The Road Warrior
Robocop
Ghost In The Shell
Akira
Battle Royale
Planet of the Apes
Dark City
A Scanner Darkly
Donnie Darko
Serenity
Strange Days
Soylent Green
Logan's Run
Silent Running
A Boy And His Dog
12 Monkeys
A Clockwork Orange
Brotherhood of the Wolf
Inception
and the 1927 silent classic Metropolis
comedy -
Little Shop of Horrors (both versions - I like the remake more)
The Rocky Horror Picture Show
Phantom Of The Paradise
Brother From Another Planet
Spaced Invaders
Brazil
Delicatessan
The City of Lost Children
The Man With Two Brains
Frankenhooker
Brain Damage
MIB
Street Trash
Toxic Avenger
horror -
Critters
The Hidden
The Borrower
Night of the Creeps
Slither
Invasion of the Body Snatchers (both 1956 and 1978 versions)
THEM! (classic giant ant movie the very best of the irradiated giant mutant nature films)
The Thing
Any Frankenstein adaptations qualify
The Invisible Man
Hollow Man
The Re-Animator
From Beyond
Shivers
The Brood
Videodrome
The Fly

Re: THE BEST SCI-FI FILMS.....
Lifeforce (Mathilda May is the hottest nekkid space vampire ever)
Night of the Comet
Bad Taste
Phase IV (trippy 70s film about the collective intelligence of ants taking a group of scientists, studying them, hostage)
Flash Gordon
Heavy Metal
Moon
2001: A Space Odyssey
2010
The Iron Giant
The Day The Earth Stood Still
Invaders From Mars
This Island Earth
Galaxy Quest
damn I forgot about Tron, good one, the original "Matrix" of sorts, I seen Legacy at the theatres and was quite entertained, nice eye candy and choreoagraphy but the story is so-so, Jeff Bridges reprises his typical hippy sagacity persona.
Some English sci-fi classics
Village of the Damned
Children of the Damned
Day of the Triffids
(Hammer Films Quatermass trilogy)
The Quatermass Experiment
Quatermass 2
Quatermass And The Pit
An Italian sci-fi classic
Planet of The Vampires (one of the main source materials that influenced Ridley Scott's Alien)
Television
Twilight Zone
Outer Limits
FYI, Peter Jackson will begin shooting a 2 part, 2 movie adaptation of The Hobbit in February for 2012 and 2013 releases.

Re: THE BEST SCI-FI FILMS.....
Television:
Star Trek and it's many spinoffs.
There have been 11 Star Trek movies made to date.
Star Trek The Motion Picture
Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan
Star Trek III: The Search For Spock
Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home
Star Trek V: The Final Frontier
Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country
I only like parts 1, 2, and 6 ... parts 3-5 were directed by former Star Trek cast members Leonard Nimoy and William Shatner and the quality difference is evident whereas the other 3 were directed by Robert Wise and Nicolas Meyer. Leonard Nimoy's The Voyage Home wasn't bad actually.
The New Generation movies
Star Trek: Generations
Star Trek: First Contact
Star Trek: Insurrection
Star Trek: Nemesis
I only like the first two entries of the above IMO Insurrection and Nemesis blew. Former New Generation cast member Jonathan Frakes directed First Contact and Insurrection.
And of course we have the new Star Trek movie released theatrically in 2009 which I also enjoyed.

Cyborg
Universal Soldier

Fire In The Sky

Ghosts of Mars (John Carpenter basically remade his own film Assault On Precinct 13 in sci-fi trimmings with disappointing results)
It! The Terror Beyond Space (1958) Script writer Dan O'Bannon took the plots from this b-movie and the Italian b-movie Planet Of The Vampires (1965), combining them together under a slicker larger production ALIEN (1979) with the surreal and sexual biomechanical imagery of H R Giger's bizarre art designs. He also wrote Dark Star (1974), John Carpenter's first film, a low budget parody of space odysseys which contains foreshadows of ALIEN.

Yeah, the uprising is awesome. Excellent dystopian film, this would make the choice double-header with the apocalyptic film The Road. Both have a great deal of realism and avoid the over-the-top action that typifies these sort of films.
I seen this one in theatres, wormholed through hell. I will add Pandorum.
More selections
ET: Extraterrestrial
Species
Alien Nation
The Book Of Eli
Doomsday
batteries not included
Howard The Duck
More cheesy camp romps
Spacehunter: Adventures In The Forbidden Zone
Star Crash
Cherry 2000
