UPDATE: Victim of Fontana homicide identified

A suspected gang member died Monday night when at least one shooter armed with an assault rifle fired 10 rounds at a vehicle in the Southridge area of the city.
Ricardo Hernandez, 24, of Bloomington was pronounced dead at the scene in the 14500 block of Cherry Avenue.

"According to what the detectives were able to come up with so far, there were no words exchanged prior to the shooting," said Fontana police Sgt. Billy Green.

Police received a call of shots fired near the corner of Cherry and Village Drive at 8:25 p.m. They found the victim inside a vehicle that had been struck several times by gunfire. At least one bullet pierced the gas tank, causing gasoline to pool below the vehicle.

Two other men inside the car, whose names were withheld, were not wounded.

"Based on the indication that this is a gang-involved shooting, they will not be releasing the names of the other people in the vehicle," Green said.

Police investigators say at least one occupant of a sport-utility vehicle opened fire on the other car. One of the bullets struck Hernandez, a passenger in the vehicle.

The driver eventually pulled over.

Police say Hernandez was a documented Fontana gang member, and the other two people he was riding with are also suspected gang members.
