RIALTO - An 8-year-old girl found hanging from her bunk bed died Wednesday in the 1300 block of North Alice Avenue, police said Thursday.

The girl was found by family members, authorities said.

Police received a 9-1-1 call from the residence at 7:05 p.m. Officers found the girl hanging with a belt tied around her throat, police said. The belt was attached to a garment affixed to the upper bunk, police said.

They performed CPR on the girl and transported her to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center in Colton, where she was pronounced dead.

She went into the bedroom to do homework and wasn't heard from for about 45 minutes, said Lt. Joe Cirilo. The girl's grandmother, who has legal guardianship, checked on her and discovered the door was locked.

The girl's older sisters, ages 13 and 11, helped their grandmother break open the door.

Police have notified the girl's mother, who doesn't live in the home, Cirilo said.

There is no evidence of foul play, and police continue to investigate whether it was an accident or a suicide, Cirilo said.

"We'll continue to talk to family members so we can try to bring some sense into what led up to this tragedy," Cirilo said.

Cirilo said an autopsy should help investigators determine if it was a suicide.

"Any time there's a death with no information, the first thing that comes to mind is suicide," Cirilo said. "What would lead an 8-year-old to take her life? ...

We don't have the answer to that."

Investigators did not find any material in the girl's schoolwork, nor any writing by the girl that indicated she was distraught, Cirilo said.

Cirilo would not discount that the girl's death could have been an accident, saying the grandmother had told the girl repeatedly not to play on the bed.

Police have made prior service calls to the house, but Cirilo said there was nothing to indicate the child was vulnerable.

The girl was a student at Morgan Elementary School, Cirilo said.
