On the two year anniversary of the Tucson, Ariz., shooting that left six dead and gravely wounded former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, the political battle over gun control legislation has escalated to new heights.
Giffords and her husband Mark Kelly launched on Tuesday “Americans for Responsible Solutions,” an initiative to reduce gun violence, while outside organizations like “Mayors Against Illegal Guns” are working to “demand a plan” from Congress that will strengthen gun regulations.
But as the cries for stricter gun control measures have increased, so has the vehement opposition. For example, conservative radio host and gun advocate Alex Jones launched into an incoherent diatribe against gun control legislation, government conspiracies, and his interviewer on CNN’s Piers Morgan Tonight.
“The megabanks that control the planet brag that they’ve taken over… They’ve taken everybody’s guns but the Swiss and the American people, and when they get our guns, they can have their world tyranny while the government buys 1.6 billion bullets, armored vehicles, tanks, helicopters, predator drones–armed now in U.S. skies being used to arrest people in North Dakota,” said Jones on Monday’s Piers Morgan Tonight. “The Second Amendment isn’t there for duck hunting; it’s there to protect us from tyrannical government and street thugs.”
Jones, who drafted a petition on the White House’s website entitled, “Deport British Citizen Piers Morgan for Attacking 2nd Amendment,” also threatened a 1776-like rebellion and insisted that the Bush administration was behind the 9/11 terror plot.
“I’m speechless, I really don’t even know what to say… Unbelievable,” said Roxanna Green of Jones’ interview on Hardball Tuesday. Green’s young daughter Christina-Taylor Green was among those killed in the Tucson shooting two years ago. She is featured in a powerful new ad for the group “Mayors Against Illegal Guns.”
“When I saw that [Jones] clip, it made me happy,” said Former Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell on Tuesday’s Hardball. “It pointed out to average Americans, as clearly as anything we can say, how crazy the other side is, and how reasonable people–including NRA members, including gun owners–reasonable people will agree that there are things we can do to minimize the risk here, to reduce the harm and the carnage, and we have to do them.”
Since Tucson, there have been 11 mass shootings in the U.S., including last month’s massacre in Newtown, Conn., where 20 elementary schoolers and six educators were killed.
Vice President Biden, who is leading a task force that will recommend actions to reduce gun violence, will meet with representatives from the National Rifle Association and other gun ownership groups on Thursday.

Set back from what? Once the gubbament has something in their agenda 9 times out of 10 they will accomplish it. You cant avoid the inevitable. If the gubbament wants more control then that is what they will most likely get. Alex Jones just helped justify it for the average gullible Joe to believe these regulations will make a difference.
