San Bernardino fugitive arrested by FBI SWAT in Las Vegas after standoff/gunfight
LAS VEGAS - A 37-year-old fugitive wanted in San Bernardino on a homicide case was arrested and jailed after exchanging gunfire with FBI SWAT agents at a Las Vegas apartment was wanted on a murder warrant in one California case and was sought for questioning in another, authorities said Wednesday.
Rene A. Dendaas wasn't wounded during what Las Vegas police termed a "firefight" late Tuesday at an apartment complex in a gritty neighborhood several blocks east of the Las Vegas Strip.
Dendaas was arrested early Wednesday after a standoff that lasted several hours and forced the evacuation of neighboring apartments, police and an FBI spokeswoman said.
A bullet, debris or shrapnel may have struck an FBI agent's ballistic vest during the shooting, but FBI spokeswoman Bridget Pappas said the agent wasn't hurt. Pappas said she couldn't provide details, pending an investigation by FBI officials.
Dendaas was being held without bail at the Clark County jail in Las Vegas, awaiting an extradition hearing and transfer to San Bernardino.
San Bernardino police Lt. Paul Williams said Dendaas had been sought on a murder warrant issued May 8 in the early morning slaying of 42-year-old Harold Edward Sykes III on March 11.
Sykes was shot several times as he sat in a parked car. Williams said he didn't know what investigators think led to the shooting.
Dendaas also was sought
on a probation violation, and Williams said Dendaas was sought for questioning in a March 10 slaying. Williams didn't immediately have details about that case.
It was not immediately clear if Dendaas had a lawyer. Suspected fugitives arrested in Nevada are not provided an attorney at state expense during extradition hearings.
