SAN BERNARDINO >> A 17-year-old San Gorgonio High School student already behind bars in connection with the brutal slaying of a 20-year-old Colton woman has been charged in the killing of Alejandro Sanchez Herrera, 28, investigators announced during a Monday news conference.
The move follows a months-long investigation targeting the California Garden Crips criminal street gang, which resulted in the seizure of 43 firearms and the arrests of 43 people, law enforcement officials said. Charges have been filed in two murder cases so far.
"He was the youngest one arrested as part of this investigation," San Bernardino homicide Detective Edward Flores said of Billy Ray Duncan, III.
The task force behind Operation No Boundaries was created in June and culminated Nov. 3, Police Chief Jarrod Burguan said during the morning news conference at the San Bernardino Police Department. It involved several agencies, including San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department, San Bernardino police and other local and federal agencies.
Duncan was already behind bars for the death of Jaemiah Trammel, 20, of Colton, found shot July 20 in her car in the 1400 block of East Date Street when detectives discovered information that linked the suspect to the Aug. 11 death of Alejandro Sanchez Herrera, 28, of San Bernardino.
A second person, Dyjuan Trice, 19, was also charged in Sanchez Herrera's death, Flores said. Trice was already behind bars for a previous crime, according to booking and court records.
"This was a true team effort," San Bernardino County District Attorney Michael A. Ramos said during the news conference as he, Burguan, Sheriff John McMahon, San Bernardino Mayor Carey Davis and FBI Special Agent Sean Ragan stood flanked by large boards, one showing the dozens arrested during the operation and another illustrating how the 43 firearms were linked to crimes through the city and beyond.
"We have evidence that some of these guns were used in shootings in Inglewood and even Las Vegas," said Flores.
However, one of the more high-profile homicides of the year, the killing of 12-year-old Jason Spears on March 13, remains open.
"We ran the cartridges found at the scene of (Spears') homicide against the 43 firearms, and there was no match," Flores said. "That was one that we were and still are working hard to solve."
Many of the arrests were for murder, attempted murder and drug offenses allegedly connected to the California Garden Crips street gang, officials say.
The specialized team consisting of investigators from the Sheriff's Specialized Investigation Division, the Gang Intelligence Team Division, San Bernardino police, San Bernardino County Probation, California Highway Patrol and the FBI, was formed as authorities noticed an uptick in violent crime in San Bernardino and surrounding areas.
The operation not only resulted in arrests of violent crimes, but authorities say tactics, such as wire tapping and proactive patrols and intelligence, resulted in the prevention of five potential homicides.
"We intercepted five shootings just before they happened," Burguan said.
Despite what authorities call a positive operation, officials said the crackdown on criminal street gangs will continue.
"This is not the end," Burguan said.
Operation No Boundaries is not the first time the gang has been targeted by authorities. In 2012, the FBI Safe Streets Task Force known as the San Bernardino Gang Impact Team conducted "Operation Squeeze Play," which led to federal charges filed against 12 people, including California Garden Crips members, for a variety of federal narcotics and firearms violations.
In March 2014, the gang was again in law enforcement's sights when 33 arrests were made during a similar operation. Of those, the district attorney filed 29 counts of attempted murder, 16 counts of conspiracy or solicitation to commit murder and two counts of accessory to murder.
