San Bernardino man suspected in Fontana party-crew slaying arrested

A man was jailed on suspicion of two counts of murder Thursday in connection with a shooting outside a crowded house party last year, Fontana police said.

Francisco Javier Rodriguez, 20, of San Bernardino, was arrested at the Mira Loma bakery where he worked, said Fontana police Sgt. Jeff Decker.

After a six-month investigation and more than 100 witness interviews, prosecutors charged Rodriguez last week in the Oct. 14, 2007, killings in Fontana's Sierra Lakes development.

Aaron Angulo, 21, of Rialto, and Anthony Lopez, 21, of West Covina, were found shot in the 16400 block of El Revino Drive in Fontana. Angulo died at a local hospital and Lopez died as friends were driving him there.

The fight that led to the shootings began when members of a party crew tried to steal some partygoers' baseball caps, Decker said. The struggle spilled outside the home, where Rodriguez is suspected of pulling a handgun and shooting Angulo, Decker said.

Angulo was mistaken for a rival party crew member, but he belonged to the same group as Rodriguez, Decker said.

As the fight continued, the gunman approached a car and shot Lopez as he sat inside, Decker said. The second victim was not believed to be a gang member, Decker said.

With more than 100 people at the party, it took detectives months to locate and interview all witnesses, Decker said.
