Gang signs and sports

I came across this website talking about a basketball player throwing up a blood sign at a game. He supposedly got fined 25 grand for throwin up. Granted I'm not somone who follows sports much, but I don't remember this happening much before. Just curious if ya'll remember other times when pros would throw up a gang sign, or a reason why it would be done in the first place.
