Stomach bug alert: CDC says mystery flu-like bug spreading
A mystery stomach bug alert is in effect. The Centers for Disease Control (or CDC) said a flu-like bug which has infected 250 people is spreading. So far, eight states are impacted by the mysterious stomach illness, citing a July 24 [b style="line-height: 21px; color: rgb(62, 114, 167); font-weight: bold;"]Fox News[/b] report.
Officials say the stomach bug spreading from state since June is believed to be cyclospora, a one-cell parasite, which usually thrives in fecal matter. Essentially, it's a food-borne illness.
Dr. Marc Siegel of the NYU Langone Medical Center believes the numbers of people sickened by the mystery intestinal bug is much more than 260 due to a lack of accurate reporting and diagnosis.
On how the worrisome infection is contracted, Langone said:
Those who contract the stomach bug usually report symptoms similar to the annual flu virus. After about a week of coming into contact with the parasite, people usually present with violent diarrhea and stomach pain.
Thankfully, the infection from the stomach parasite is treated with an antibiotic called Bactrim

Dr. Langone said it's typically spread by people who don't wash their hands properly and then handle food or produce that is transported across state lines."Usually people get it from traveling to other countries. It's on food, it's in water. You cannot get it by touching someone who has it. So that's really good news."
