Re: GREATEST FILMS OF ALL TIME..
The Japanese even used hot air balloons fitted with pressure gages and bombs, they launched as many as 10,000 towards the US, only one was reported to have killed some children.....the rest are unaccounted for.

Re: GREATEST FILMS OF ALL TIME..
The battle of Attu during the Aluetian Islands campaign was actually pretty fucking bloody. One of the largest bonzai charges of the war happened on Attu they overan the lines and engaged in hand to hand combat with the US Army Infantry until all the Japs were killed. Fought in arctic conditions as well. Which is ironic seeing as how the 7th Infantry Division who fought on Attu was originally supposed to go fight in the Mediterrenean theatre of the war in Europe and fight in North Africa but found itself in some of the worst battles of the Pacific war including Okinawa.

Truly showed the horror of Peleliu..maybe it wont be such a forgotten battle after this series.
I dont know...we'll see...should be well known even without a fuckin miniseries being partly set there. Highest casualty rate of any battle in the Pacific Theatre. I think i mentioned it already but the fight to take Bloody Nose Ridge on Peleliu is widely considered the single toughest fight the USMC/US Army had during the Pacific war.

Re: GREATEST FILMS OF ALL TIME..
as much as we like to go to war, we dont really remember all the battles and shit, no sense of pride in the warriors or battles anymore...
Re: GREATEST FILMS OF ALL TIME..
The Aleutian Islands bore no strategic significance but it did pull troops and material from the Pacific theatre...which is what Japanese military planners hoped for. Some of the worst conditions to fight in were on those barren islands....but the US had to respond....during the Nam....nva captured the imperial city during the tet offensive....US had to respond immediately and the Marines kicked ass...took a few weeks but they got the job done.....Huero wrote:The battle of Attu during the Aluetian Islands campaign was actually pretty fucking bloody. Re: GREATEST FILMS OF ALL TIME..
If you really want a solid education on the Vietnam War especially the demoralization of the troops serving, read books by Keith William Nolans. They are fuckin amazing unbiased journalism. For starters try Into Laos!!!
Quite eyeopening.
Back to the subject at hand who here loves The Insider starring Russell Crowe and Al Pacino. This is an awesome picture concerning when Wygand a former recently fired Big Tobacco execut exposes everything to 60 Minutes stirring the wrath of Big Tobacco corporations. It was directed by Michael Mann (Manhunter, Last of the Mohicans, Heat, Miami Vice). It is my favorite picture by the director and not action oriented like his other pictures but has a infinitely deeper message. If you haven't yet CHECK IT OUT!
Anyways don't have the internet anymore so won't be posting much but there ya go.

Re: GREATEST FILMS OF ALL TIME..
^ ^ that was serious documentary type film The Killing Fields
about the Khmer Rouge in Kampuchea exterminating anyone with any education
trying to make it a Utopia by starting new again under a Socialism free of anything else
Another film that wasn't as good as that, but it was alright in my book
was Gene Hackman's 1983s ~> "UNDER FIRE"
concerning the overthrow of the long standing Somoza dictatorship in Nicaragua
one of the longest running dictatorships in the history of Latino-America

Yeah, I'm surprised that I am not the only one who has seen this movie. Not too many people are aware of the "Khmer Rouge", about how the Cambodians even ended up in this country, or the pain that they endured in doing so. Pol Pot and his Khmer Rouge slaughtered more people than they could count....and this ended up being one of the biggest genocides in history, they we're literally wiping out their own, one by one, town by town. Most Cambodians living here in the U.S. had close family members (not talking great great grandfathers here) who were killed by the hands of the Khmer Rouge killing machine. About 1 in 5 people living in Cambodia we're killed during this era, so it's easy to do the math. The main actor in the movie was Haing Ngor, a very well respected and honored Cambodian man who fled the horrors of the Khmer Rouge to come to the U.S. to become a successful doctor and eventually actor. He was hailed and beloved by many Khmer's from the States to Kampuchea for his role in the movie in which represented them all...but unfortunetely, he was killed by a local Cambodian gang outside his home in Los Angeles Chinatown. He fought for his people, represented his people, and tragically was killed by his people here in California. Story has it that he was robbed at gunpoint and refused to give up his gold necklace, which had a pendant that contained the only picture he had left of his deceased wife who died by the Khmer Rouge while they both we're trying to flee the country. It was a picture from her ID card that he managed to keep and made into necklace as his way to honor her. He swore to everybody that he would NEVER take it off during his speech at the Academy Awards...and the man lived up to his word. That's what I call honorable.

Re: GREATEST FILMS OF ALL TIME..
GETTYSBURG adapted from Michael Shaara's historical fiction account titled THE KILLER ANGELS. Stars Martin Sheen as General Robert E Lee and Tom Berenger as Lt General James Longstreet. Excellent movie that portrays Lee's failure to invade the North at Gettysburg Pennsylvania and proved to be a vital turning point in the war.
For any that want to become Civil War history buffs, the works of Bruce Catton, Shelby Foote, and Bell Wiley are quintessential reading. Shelby Foote's comprehensive three volume, 3000-page history trilogy The Civil War: A Narrative took 20 years to complete.

Re: GREATEST FILMS OF ALL TIME..
Who remembers STREET SMART starring Morgan Freeman as a pimp and Christopher Reeve as a journalist I believe. Back in the day, 1987 speaking, I didn't know who Morgan Freeman really was back then. He played the part of a pimp so convincingly he managed to disturb the shit outta me. But this was over 20 years ago and the movie could be laughably dated now. Still I thought he was a real pimp starring in a film LOL!

Of course, I'll add GLORY, about the black 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, starring Matthew Broderick, Morgan Freeman, and Denzel Washington.
Another excellent Civil War film is the B&W 1951 version of RED BADGE OF COURAGE directed by John Huston and starring Audie Murphy, it presents a real grim and gritty perspective of a green soldier going the motions of camp life and learning courage on the battlefield. Great little film very underrated. I wouldn't bother with the 1974 made-for-tv color version starring Richard Thomas tho.

Re: GREATEST FILMS OF ALL TIME..
Ulzana's Raid - one of the best westerns I have seen, with Burt Lancaster as a grizzled wise veteran indian tracker and his personal apache indian scout assist a greenhorn Lt of the US calvary hunt an apache war party led by the cunning Ulzana. One western with a great deal of realism for its unsparing honesty of native americans specifically Apaches. Today, native americans are now universally depicted as noble savages i.e. Dances With Wolves, but real history dictates native americans were far from innocent themselves but engaged in savage torture, wholesale massacres, slavery, and even cannibalism in their tribal wars long before the europeans even stepped off their tall ships. The apaches (and I'll add comanches) were amongst the fiercest and most savage warriors the white and spanish have ever met.
